I was shooting travel films for our company’s Roaring India tourism project in the Sangli district of Maharashtra. Just then I saw a strange stone Maze next to the Kavathe Mahankal–Tasgaon highway. I got curious and stopped the car on the side of the road and went to see it. When I saw it for the first time I was surprised too. I couldn’t figure out what it was. What is the secret of this maze of stones? I was worried. Eventually, I asked the local people, then I came to know that this is the Maze of Kulwantini.
About 200 – 300 years ago there was a dancer named Kulwantini. She was also called Kalavantini. She adored her art and loved dancing. She had no lust for money, jewelry, awards, and prestige. Kulwantini was very beautiful. She was so beautiful that all the men went crazy over her beauty and the girls were jealous of her beauty.
Kulwantini used to roam from village to village demonstrating her dancing skills and earning her living from the money earned from it. People of that time did not have any entertainment facilities like mobile, internet, cinema, TV, WhatsApp, or YouTube. Therefore, people used to gather in large numbers to watch dance and drama performances. Thousands of people used to gather to watch the dance performance of Kulwantini. Along with her dance, the praise of her beauty was spread in all directions.
The praise of Kulwantini’s beauty even reached the ears of a king. He then invites her to his palace for a dance performance. On the invitation of the king, Kulwantini goes to the palace and demonstrates her dancing skills. Everyone praises her dancing skills. But the king gets fascinated by the beauty of Kulwantini. He goes crazy with her beauty. Kulwantini was full of beauty and an unmarried young lady. Seeing her flying hair, tall height, long nose, bowl-like eyes, innocent face, hanging waist, sweet smile on red lips, softness like butter, milky body color, and half-closed chest, the king’s mind goes out of control. The king requests her to marry him. But Kulwantini politely rejects his marriage proposal and leaves his palace.
The king completely went mad for the beauty of Kulwantini. He follows her. He blocks her way and tortures her to marry him. Then Kulwantini uses her brain and makes a maze by putting together all the small and big stones lying there. Then she puts a condition to the king that I will marry you only if you can crack this maze created by me. To crack this maze, one had to enter from one side and come back from the other side without repeating the path. Stepping back was also prohibited. The king tries to crack this maze. But he fails. But he does not give up.
The king was completely fascinated by the beauty of Kulwantini and ready to do anything to get her. The king repeatedly tries to crack Kulvantini’s maze. But he fails every time. The king becomes angry due to his defeat. The king may have bad intentions and may tie me down and forcefully marry me. He can imprison me in his palace. Due to this fear, Kulwantini quietly leaves the place and runs away. The king tries to crack her maze hundreds of times and returns to his palace after being defeated. He orders his soldiers to find Kulwantini and bring her back. But his soldiers failed to trace her and catch her. No one knows where Kulwantini went next and what happened next.
Kulwantini rejects the king’s marriage proposal in her dream of building an independent and self-respecting life and saves the honor of her name. Kulvantini means a girl with a good family and pious character. The stone maze built by her is now known as Kulvantini Kodyacha Mal. In Marathi, Kodyach Mal means the maze. It is near Yogewadi village which is located at a distance of 18 KM from Tasgaon town. If you have played the Ball in a Maze game then you can easily crack this. There is no such difficulty in this. This is a fairy tale. At present anyone can easily crack this stone maze. Such stone mazes can be seen in many villages of Maharashtra. This is just fun.
Along with this fairy tale, some false stories are also associated with this Kulwantini Maze. Some people say that there is a huge amount of treasure under these stones. There is a widespread fear that if anyone comes out of this maze without cracking it, his misfortune will begin. There is also a rumor that whoever cracks it successfully will be blessed with a beautiful wife and huge property. Some fake Babas have made it the base for their black magic experiments. And it has become a den of gambling and bad activities for bad boys. Unfortunately, Some blind devotees have started the business of God by applying saffron on these stones. However, the Kulwantini’s Maze is an interesting place. You can go there just for entertainment. But don’t fall prey to superstitions or myths…
